MADRAS, Ore. - A woman and two children died and three other people were injured when a car crossed into oncoming traffic early Friday morning and collided with a small SUV, Oregon State Police said.
Troopers responded to the scene on Highway 97 north of Madras at 2 a.m.
The investigation found that a northbound black 2000 Mazda Protege crossed into the southbound lanes, hit the guardrail and then collided with an oncoming 2006 Kia Sportage, troopers said.
The crash killed the driver of the Mazda - Sarah Marie Steffler, 33, of Moses Lake, Washington - and "a juvenile female passenger."
The crash also killed a "juvenile female" in the Kia, police said. Troopers did not release the names, ages or hometowns of the deceased children.
Three other people in the Kia were injured. The driver - Miguel Galvan Sanchez, 40, of Manson, Washington - and a passenger were taken by ambulance to the hospital in Madras. Another person was taken by helicopter from the scene to a hospital in Bend.
The crash comes at the end of a deadly week on Oregon's highways.
On Monday, 8 people died in a 2-vehicle crash in southeastern Oregon.
Then on Tuesday, a driver police say was drunk hit and killed a construction zone flagger in northeastern Oregon.
