EUGENE, Ore. - Olympic hopefuls in track and field compete at historic Hayward Field for a spot on the U.S. team to Rio.

The trials technically begin Thursday, June 30, in Salem with the 20km Race Walk.

But TrackTown16 - the third consecutive Olympic trials held in Eugene - opens Friday, July 1.

Gates to the Fan Festival area, which is free to the public, open at 1 p.m. that day.

The Opening Ceremony begins around 3 p.m. with a look back at the 1972, 1976, 1980, 2008 and 2012 Olympic trials in Eugene.

The men's shot put and 10,000m will be decided that day.

Competition continues through July 10, with a rest day on July 5. The Fan Festival is closed that day, too.
