TrackTown USA temporarily moves to Portland
Legendary Coach and TrackTown USA president Vin Lananna hosted a preview of the setting for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Monday morning.
The competition kicks off March 17 on a specially designed raised indoor track -- the whole thing was put together at a warehouse a few miles away, then taken apart and reassembled at the Oregon Convention Center.
The competition is typically used by track and field athletes as a preparation for the outdoor season ahead. This year is a bit different as athletes from around the world will be vying for spots on their respective Olympic teams.
U.S. athletes will have to compete first in the U.S competition this weekend, then the top two from each event move on to the World Championships. Track and field fans will find themselves almost in the middle of the action says Lananna.
"If you're sitting in row one and you're watching the 400 meters or the 4 by 4, you may get a few beads of sweat on you from the athletes that are competing, that's how close you'll be," Lananna said.
In addition to the main events, there will be youth competitions and a medal ceremony at Pioneer Courthouse Square at the end of each day. A few tickets may still be available, but Lananna says it will likely be a sell out event.
