CORVALLIS, Ore. – It’s Civil War week and the Ducks and Beavers are getting ready to square off on the gridiron for the 120th time.

In honor of the annual battle, we’re reflecting on a few highlights from one of the greatest rivalries in college sports.

The battle between Oregon State and Oregon fans really started to become a Civil War in the 1930s. In ’37, Oregon State University won the game and on the following Monday, students from Corvallis drove to Eugene just to rub it in.

But according to former University of Oregon archivist Keith Richard, the Ducks were waiting.

“Earl, who was then the dean of students, got the students out with firehoses from inside the buildings. So the students met the Oregon State students with firehoses,” Richard said.

If history repeats itself, things could get lively again.
