Ducks, Beavers host season openers Saturday

No matter who you root for, college football fans in Oregon have something to cheer about this weekend.

The Oregon State Beavers take on the Portland State Vikings at 1 p.m. Saturday in Reser Stadium, bringing the football fever back to Corvallis.

The last two FCS opponents the Beavers have opened the season against have left Reser with a win. In 2011 it was Sacramento State, last season the Beavers were bested by Eastern Washington.

With the departure of Brandin Cooks, the big question is who will become Sean Mannion's new favorite target. OSU junior Richard Mullaney is likely to make some plays, as he's the most experienced wide receiver coming back for the 2014 season.

While the Beavers fate is somewhat uncertain as they face the Vikings, it's pretty clear how Eugene hometown favorites the University of Oregon Ducks will do in their season opener against South Dakota.

Oregon should easily handle the Coyotes, but one thing for the Duck faithful to watch for is the debuts for freshmen wide receiver Devon Allen and running back Royce Freeman. Allen had a huge season on the track, winning the NCAA and US titles in the high hurdles.

Freeman, a true freshman out of Imperial High School in San Diego, is listed in the starting running back spot as a three-way tie with Thomas Tyner and Byron Marshall. There's no doubt freeman should have his fair share of carries in Saturday's game.

Kick off for the Ducks is 7 p.m. at Autzen Stadium.
