ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A 21-month-old child has died after being left unattended in a vehicle in Douglas County, according to Roseburg Police.

According to Roseburg Police Department, around 4:12 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to Evergreen Urgent Care on Edenbower Boulevard to investigate a possible death.

Investigation revealed a child had been left unattended in a vehicle in a parking lot adjacent to Evergreen Urgent Care for several hours, the report states.

Ambulance personnel responded and transported the child to Mercy Medical Center where the child was pronounced dead, police said.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team responded to investigate.

The mother of the child, 38-year-old Nicole Marie Engler of Roseburg, was taken into custody and lodged at the Douglas County Jail, charged with second degree manslaughter.

An online staff directory for Evergreen Family Medicine shows a woman with that name employed as a nurse practitioner. Evergreen referred questions about Engler to police.

The investigation is ongoing.
