Firefighters respond to a structure fire in Central Point

(Fire District 3)

Fire crews are responded to a barn on Newland Road in Central Point Monday morning.

Fire District 3 says as the Battalion Chief was leaving White City, he was able to see a large column of smoke coming from the area while both Mercy Flights and Central Point Police were able to later confirm that the structure was fully engulfed.

" While traveling to the fire, dispatch stated that there were horses in the area. Fortunately, a neighbor was able to release the horses to safety," Fire District 3 said on their Facebook page.

And although it's been a wet spring so far, crews are warning the public to stay alert.

"I think it should be on top of all of our minds as we're kind of heading into fire season, as we're starting to prepare. We need to be cognizant of the weather conditions and as burning season is open to we need to have those things on top of our mind as well," said Ashley Blakely, the public information officer for Fire District 3

Firefighters worked on all the hot spots until 3:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Crews say the structure is likely a total loss.
