UPDATE (10:50 a.m.) -- Jackson County Sheriff's Office says the driver of the car was 55-year-old Eric Joyner.

Joyner was the only person in the 2013 Ford Fusion that struck the tree and caught fire.

JCSO says based on evidence and information from the family, Joyner may have intentionally driven off the roadway and into the tree. According to JCSO's investigation, Joyner struggled with chronic illness and sought mental health treatment.

Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies along with Jackson County Fire District 3 crews responded to a car fire along Foothill Road, between Vilas Road and Corey Road in Central Point.

JCSO say a sedan traveling northbound left the roadway near a residential driveway, struck a large pine tree, and burst into flames.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the driver is known and the family has been notified. A confirmation by the medical examiner will be made prior to releasing the name of the driver.

North Foothill Road was closed for three hours between Corey Road and East Vilas for about three hours as deputies investigated the crash.

North Foothill Road is now open.
