Coos Bay couple dies in house fire
COOS BAY, Ore. -- Two people are dead following a house fire in the Englewood area of Coos Bay, fire officials report.
Just after 1:30 a.m. Monday, Coos Bay Fire Department was dispatched to a possible fire near S. 19th Street and Idaho Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood.
Firefighters discovered the fire at 1840 S. 19th coming from a window on the south side of the residence.
Firefighters on scene said it was beginning to spread to other areas of the home.
Neighbors said the home's residents were unaccounted for and may be in the house.
Firefighters confirmed that the couple had died in the blaze, the report said.
While the fire was contained primarily to one room of the house, officials said the whole building was exposed to thick, black smoke.
The home did not have any smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
"Because this was a fatal fire, fire department protocol requires the notification of the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office," Coos Bay Fire Department said in a news release. "A deputy fire marshal and the Regional Fire Investigation Team are assisting Coos Bay with the investigation. The County Medical Examiner has not yet released the names of the victims."
Coos Bay Fire Department was assisted on scene by Coos Bay Police Department.
The fire department reminds everyone that working smoke alarms are critical in alerting occupants of a fire.
