VENETA, Ore. - Since arriving in November, Volunteers on Wheels has helped more than 25 non-profit groups in the Eugene/Springfield area.

The group said they have totaled 2,500 volunteer hours.

Some local groups they've helped include Food for Lane County, The Eugene Public Library and Habitat for Humanity.

On Sunday, the team of eight helped repair a theater in Veneta.

They live, eat and sleep in their buses during their cross-country expedition.

Volunteers on Wheels founder, Steven Boutwell said he developed a passion for volunteering after falling on hard times.

"After 10 years of train hopping and hitch hiking, I figured I should do something better with my life and giving back to other non-profits is what this project does and that's what I want to do," Boutwell said.

Boutwell said there is no planned route or destination for their cross-country trip.

Their next stop is back to San Francisco.
