Victims of motel fire planned to retire in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Danny and Sandra Shoemaker moved into their dream home about a year ago.
Sandra ran a cleaning business. Danny planned to retire from his job at a mill this year, their daughters said.
The couple died Friday, 2 of the 4 victims of a fire that tore through a motel on Highway 101 in the Oregon Coast town of Newport.
The Shoemakers are survived by two daughters and a son, as well as grandchildren.
The sisters want to wait until their brother arrives in Oregon to speak publicly about what happened.
But they already have questions: What started the fire? And why were the Shoemakers staying at the motel? Sandra had told one of her daughters on Thursday that the couple was headed to Lincoln City, not Newport.
