OAKRIDGE, Ore. - Public land managers estimate the winter storm brought down 1,000 trees along the Highway 58 corridor and another 200 to 1,000 trees every mile on side roads through the area.

The winter storm closed the highway between Pleasant Hill and Central Oregon Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019.

The closure cut off the community of Oakridge from the outside world. A "lifeline" route to Oakridge allowed utility crews to enter the area and restore power this week.

The highway remained closed as of 1 p.m. Friday.

Willamette National Forest staff estimate up to 1,000 trees are down per mile along the highway.

The plan is to sell the trees for firewood, according to the Forest Service.
