SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Spacious family friendly patient rooms, an actual main entrance, and state of the art technology in surgery suites are all part of the $100 million expansion and renovation project for McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield.

Phase one of renovations includes state of the art surgery suites. Officials said these smart operating rooms not only make surgery easier for doctors, but will help them become more accurate and efficient during surgeries.

"This is an example of a safety checklist that we do prior to every surgery and, normally, the nurse reads it off, but this way we are not proceeding. We take a timeout, everyone refers to it, and we move," said Tony Ballenger of McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center.

It's just one of the ways the renovation helps doctors.

Surgery begins this Saturday in the new smart operating rooms.

The rest of the expansion at the center should be completed in November of 2018.
