EUGENE, Ore. - The coveted Slug Queen title will soon be up for grabs, and this year a furry feline will be in the running.

The Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Gastropod will crown the silliest and slimiest contestant on Friday. The annual competition celebrates the wacky, joyful and silly side of Eugene, but it's never seen anything quite like this: its first-ever feline contestant. Jonah, a 12-year-old cat, will compete for the crown this year alongside owner Anne Wilson. Jonah is also known as Queen A.D.O.P.T., which stands for "Aristocat de Feline Slime Optimistic Pawsanova the Great Catsby."

Wilson said Jonah loves cuddling, treats, and the competition's namesake: slugs.

"Sleeping with slugs and playing with them," Wilson said.

At the competition, Wilson will perform a song with Jonah. He has a throne, a crown, and a royal carriage to complete the look. Like all Slug Queen contestants, Jonah is running on a platform. His platform pays tribute to the shelter where he came from, Greenhill Humane Society.

"We're talking about the importance of humane education, of adopting, of sheltering our community's most vulnerable members which are the lost, stray, surrendered and abandoned animals here in Eugene and Springfield," said Sasha Elliott, Greenhill's Community Engagement Manager.

"People are going to pet shops and getting pets bred and they really need to just go out to the shelters," Wilson added. "That's where you find all the really lovable, sweet animals that have been overlooked. Jonah had been overlooked and I fostered him for three months and then I couldn't let him go."

A champion for his fellow shelter animals, Jonah will now have to win over the hearts of the judges on Friday. He will be judged on his costume, performance and a Q & A.

The 35th Annual Slug Queen Competition and Coronation is on Friday, August 11th at Park Blocks on 8th & Oak St. in Downtown Eugene.
