Sheriff asks for help identifying car and driver shot at by state trooper in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. - Investigators have released images of the car that drove at an Oregon State Police trooper in Eugene early Monday morning, asking the public for help identifying the vehicle and driver.
The trooper fired at the car after the driver made a quick u-turn and drove straight at him, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.
The car appears to be a dark-colored, 2-door coupe, possibly a 1990 to 1997 Mazda Miata, the sheriff's office said.
"The vehicle may have damage from the incident," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who knows the location of the driver or vehicle involved in the above incident, or who has video surveillance of the involved area to include nearby roads, to call 541-682-4141."
The county Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team is investigating the trooper's decision to fire on the vehicle, as required under Oregon law anytime law enforcement uses deadly force.
