NORTH BEND, Ore. - If you've ever wanted to get a closer look inside what the Coast Guard does, later this month you'll get your chance.

Coast Guard Sector North Bend is opening its doors to the community at an Open House in April.

On the South Coast of Oregon, you see them in the air and in the water, and now for the first time you'll have a chance to see inside the Coast Guard sector North Bend. They're inviting the community to learn more about who they are and what they do.

"Sometimes we have to fly closer than we'd like to houses and areas in order to help save someone's life, so we want them to know that we're here to help protect and we're not here to disturb anyone," said Casey Gilmore with the Coast Guard sector North Bend.

"Here at Sector North Bend, we're honored to serve in this area," said Jake Rettig. "We're proud of what we do so the goal is really just to open our doors to share that with the public."

At the open house, you'll be able to watch an MH-65 helicopter do areal search and rescue demonstrations on the runway.

"See what goes into our helicopter flying, all the work that's behind getting the aircraft ready to fly and be safe," said Rettig. "Safe to fly would be one thing that people might not get a chance to see on a day to day basis."

The open house will not display only air crafts, but Station Coos Bay will have some of their small response boats on display. The goal is to strengthen the bond between the community and local coast guard units.

Everyone, young and old, is welcomed to stop by to the event later this month. The open house is set for Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sector North Bend on Connecticut Avenue.
