Police: Death in Springfield a possible crime
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Police responded to a call of a dead animal on Mill Street Monday afternoon, but what they found was a human body. Now officials are investigating the cause of death.
71-year-old Leonard Gordon Johnson II was dead at the scene when emergency personnel arrived. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Police cannot release many details at this time, but they were on scene at 465 Mill Street all day Tuesday, gathering evidence and interviewing neighbors. However, they are saying this could be a crime scene.
Springfield Police initially responded to the call of a dead animal Monday around 2:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Mill Street. There was a heavy police presence in the area Monday afternoon as policed asked neighbors if they had any information on the body.
Tuesday, forensics investigators and Springfield Police remained on scene and continued to question people who live at the apartment complex. Crime tape closed off a dirt area next to the building.
