Sheriff: Suspect shot, killed by deputy investigating report of a stolen car

OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING: One suspect shot by Sheriff Deputies in Santa Clara

EUGENE, Ore. - A man is dead after being shot by a Lane County Sheriff's Deputy on Monday evening following a report of a stolen vehicle in the Santa Clara area of Eugene.

At approximately 4:51 p.m., an LCSO deputy responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, later identified as a white Honda Accord at the 500 block of Clairmont Drive, near River Road. The deputy observed two occupants in the vehicle, and as he approached, the male driver exited and was uncooperative with the deputy.

The male, who was in possession of a firearm, was shot by the deputy and subsequently transported to the hospital for medial attention, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The identity of the male is not being released at this time.

The second occupant of the vehicle has been identified by the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team investigators, and has been contacted by law enforcement. He is not currently in custody.

The details of this incident are being investigated by the IDFIT, who will take the information gathered at the scene of the incident and investigate the use of deadly force over the coming days.

At the time of the incident, deputies and officers were aware of the possibility of a second suspect, but could not locate him at the time. Several agencies canvassed the area and interview people who might have witnessed the incident.

Deputies identified a "home of interest" in the 500 block, where they attempted to make contact with the people inside. Several people exited the home and were questioned by police.

While the large presence of law enforcement was on the scene, officials encouraged residents in the area to stay inside and lock their doors. Law enforcement does not believe there is any ongoing threat in the area at this time.
