LANE COUNTY, Ore. – Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to six reports of cougar sightings Monday.

The sightings were in the south hills of Eugene, Elmira, Noti, Cottage Grove and Cedar Flat in Springfield.

Officials say as the weather warms up, sightings will become more common.

If you see one, ODFW says there are safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Slowly back away from the cougar or try to scare the cougar off with loud noises
  • Do not turn your back on a cougar

“Turning and running could trigger the animal to chase you, which is the last thing you want to do,” said Christopher Yee, a wildlife biologist with ODFW.

Yee said if you are concerned about a cougar in your neighborhood, call ODFW.
