Neighbor alerts Veneta residents to fire in garage

VENETA, Ore. - A neighbor spotted a fire in a garage and awoke the residents early Thursday morning.

No one was injured. Firefighters confined the blaze to a garage workshop used for making alterations.

The neighbor spotted the fire before 6 a.m. and started knocking on the door, Lane Fire Authority said.

"At this point the house has not been affected, it's just the garage and shop area of the house," Lt. Tressa Miller said.

Kent Robbins, who lives in the home, expressed gratitude to his neighbor.

"The most important thing we had a neighbor that was willing to wake us up and call 911," he said. "We had responders who were willing to come out and fight the fire. Without them there would be nothing here not even the house. And that was more important than losing some stuff."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
