Police: Officers shot, killed man in Coos Bay

COOS BAY, Ore. - A man died after pointing a rifle at police Saturday morning, Coos Bay Police said.

The officer-involved shooting took place in Coos Bay on Saturday morning at approximately 6:45 a.m.

The incident started when police were attempting to make an arrest on Eric Sweet for Felony Attempting to Elude an Officer, police said.

There were two attempts to stop Sweet on Saturday morning between 6 a.m.. and 6:44 a.m., but both were discontinued for safety reasons.

Officers traced Sweet back to his home at 475 Johnson, where the suspect eventually exited the residence with a rifle, police said

The officers ordered Sweet to drop the rifle, but he continued to point it at one of the officers, forcing a member of the Coos Bay Police to open fire, according to police.

Sweet was wounded and died from his wounds at the scene, police said.

The names of the officers involved in the incident have not been released, but they will be in the near future. All three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
