PORTLAND, Ore. – A 20-year-old was indicted on several murder charges in the death of his girlfriend’s toddler son nearly three months after he pleaded not guilty to the crime.

The 10-count grand jury indictment charges Taylor Lynn Kraig on several counts, including aggravated felony murder, murder by abuse, unlawful sexual penetration, and domestic violence.

Kraig was first arrested in August as a suspect in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, Zachariah Luda Daugherty.

Zachariah was taken to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital on August 15, where he later died of what the medical examiner deemed “homicidal violence.”

Kraig was initially arrested and charged with domestic violence murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The indictment, filed Friday, accuses Kraig of maiming the toddler on the day of his hospitalization, and of a “pattern and practice of assault and torture” that led up to the child’s death.

Kraig was indicted on aggravated murder by abuse, aggravated felony murder, murder by abuse, felony murder, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, three counts of criminal mistreatment, third-degree assault, and fourth-degree assault (domestic violence).

Detectives interviewed several acquaintances and family members during their investigation.
