WASCO COUNTY, Ore. — A new brush fire in Wasco County has prompted a Level 1 (get ready to go) evacuation notices for the rural Oregon towns of Shaniko and Antelope.
As of 5:45 p.m., the Wasco County Sheriff said two homes are threatened by the Cow Canyon Fire, which is burning an estimated 200 acres of dry grass and brush in the area.
The Cow Canyon Fire started around 12:45 PM Thursday between Cow Canyon and the interchange of Highway 197 and Highway 97.
Farmers are working to protect their land alongside firefighters from the Bureau of Land Management. Air support crews are also helping to line the fire.
The State Fire Marshal, Wasco Counnty Sheriff's deputies, Oregon State Police troopers and the Oregon Dept. of Transportation are also on-scene.
