EUGENE, Ore. - President Trump has approved a major disaster declaration which will release federal funds to help reimburse governments and utilities for a portion of the estimated $9.5 million in damage caused by the December 2016 ice storm.
"I just received word that President Trump issued a major disaster declaration for Lane and Josephine counties for the December 14 – 17 ice storm," Linda Cook, Lane County Emergency Manager, said Wednesday. "There will be more information forthcoming on next steps in the next few days."
The storm left tens of thousands of people without power, some for more than a week.
The ice damaged thousands of trees on both public and private property. Tree care professionals expect to be cleaning up problems caused by the storm through much of the coming year.
