'I realized there was a need, that they want to try to act, so let's try it'
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - The stage is set. Costumes are on. Actors are running through their lines.
The circus has come to town.
This is Creative Chaos' second play, spearheaded by ringmaster Carmen Dowell.
Carmen says she designed creative chaos when her friend Monica Vanise, who has Down syndrome, told her it was her dream to be on stage.
Monica was set to audition for another theater company for the part of someone with a disability.
"Wow, this is perfect, she'd be great for the part," Carmen said. "So we practiced and we went and the director called me outside and said we had to leave, that she could not be a part of the auditioning process."
After years, Monica did finally get to be on stage.
Carmen says her peers also wanted that opportunity.
"I realized there was a need, that they want to try to act, so let's try it," she said.
You can see "Under the Big Top" at the Opal Theater in Cottage Grove Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. or Sunday at 2 p.m.
