SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A Springfield gym hosted a grapple tournament Saturday for jiu-jitsu students of all ages, with the proceeds going to a local Relief Nursery organization.

Participants at the Performance Martial Arts Academy gathered sponsors for the 6-hour event. Each donated the pledged money to the Eugene Relief Nursery, a non-profit that works to prevent child abuse in Lane County.

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, organizers said they had already raised over $2,000.

John Butler, a father of two, said he was grappling in Saturday's event to help less fortunate kids in the community.

"I have two little girls of my own, so that's near and dear to my heart so i'd do anything to help. So it's a pretty neat event," said Butler.

11-year-old Angelina McPherson grappled for a similar reason, saying she spent the day doing what she loved and helping kids her age stay safe.

"When my coach said we could compete in the 'grapple-a-thon' to help child abuse I was like 'I have to do this!'," said McPherson.
