Fatal accident on Hwy 99 near Junction City blocks traffic for four hours

LANE COUNTY, Ore. — Oregon State Police responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 99 near milepost 114 on Saturday night, just after 10 p.m.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the fatal crash involved a 2000 Honda Accord, operated by Saucedo Salvador-Mendez, 21, was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. The Accord collided with the back of a 2011 Ford F350, operated by Peter Haag, 20.

The front seat passenger of the Accord, identified as Francisco Jose Perez-Velasco, 33, was not wearing a seat belt, and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Salvador-Mendez was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend and treated for injuries. Both Haag and Chase Pomaikai Kealoha, who was in the back seat of the Accord, sustained minor injuries and were not transported to the hospital.

Southbound lanes of Hwy 99 were closed for about four hours.
