Eugene Toy & Hobby, established 1933, outlasts retail giant Toys R Us

As retail giant Toys R Us moves to liquidate, 5th generation family business Eugene Toy & Hobby enters their 85th year. What's the secret to their success? A personal touch - and generations of happy customers. (SBG)

EUGENE, Ore. - As industry giant Toys R Us liquidates, a local toy shop gives credit to the community for their survival.

Eugene Toy & Hobby opened their doors in 1933.

After four moves, the store settled in its current location on 11th street in 1969.

When Toys R Us first opened their doors in the 1980s, Toy & Hobby store owner Mark Agerter kept getting the same questions.

“How are you going to survive?” Agerter recalled.

“Well, they don't really do anything that we do," he said. "The major backbone of our business is the hobby business. Model planes, radios, cars, and that sort of thing. And they never really got into that sort of thing."

Now that Toys R Us plan to shut more than 700 stores across the U.S., Agerter gives credit to locals for the longevitiy of his family's business.

“We have wonderful support from our members of the community that value local business,” he said.

Agerter says comparing his store to big chain toy stores are like comparing apples to oranges, they have something the big chain stores can't offer.

“We're in our fourth generation. Our nephew is our fifth generation," he said. "We have customers that are in their third and fourth generation. To us it's like a big extended family. I think people react to that a lot. It's very personal with us."
