Driver killed in fiery crash; police still working to confirm identity
VIDA, Ore. - An SUV that went off the highway and hit a boulder was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived on scene Wednesday, Oregon State Police said.
The driver of the 2001 Ford Explorer died in the crash and fire.
Police said the person's identity has not yet been confirmed as of Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened around 4:25 p.m. on Highway 126, east of Vida.
Investigators do not yet know what caused the eastbound SUV to leave the roadway.
All lanes of the highway were closed for about an hour before one lane opened to traffic. All lanes were back open by 8:30 p.m.
The Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response, McKenzie Fire and Rescue, US Forest Service and Lane County Medical Examiner's Office assisted Oregon State Police at the scene.
