Boeing unveils Star Wars-themed Dreamliner
EVERETT, Wash. - The force was strong in Everett when Boeing and All Nippon Airways unveiled a special Star Wars-themed jet Saturday morning.
The new 787-9 Dreamliner was decked out in the likeness of Star Wars character R2-D2, much to the delight of fans all over the world.
The R2-D2 ANA jet was rolled out from its hangar, and broadcasted live over the Internet. Plenty of Star Wars characters were in attendance, and posed with onlookers after the plane was unveiled.
The jet is scheduled to begin international flights on October 18, with domestic flights such as Seattle-to-San Jose to follow.
Along with its exterior, the R2-D2 aircraft will have film-inspired additions on seats, paper napkins, and cups, the airliner said.
The force will grow stronger when Japan's All Nippon Airways adds two other Star Wars-themed planes to its fleet. One of the designs will feature BB-8, a new character that will debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, on a Boeing 777 wide-body plane. The second design will feature both R2-D2 and BB-8 on a Boeing 767.
"We're thrilled to unveil the designs of our new Star Wars themed planes, and I'm sure fans across the world will love the look," said Osamu Shinobe, President and CEO of ANA in a press release.
ANA announced their Star Wars project in April of 2015, and hopes to attract a wider range of passengers from all over the world, the company said.
