College professor holds free eclipse talk, 'Science in the Shadows'

COOS BAY, Ore. -- The solar eclipse on August 21 is getting a lot of attention and folks in the bay area have an opportunity to learn more about it.

The Coos Bay Library is hosting a local professor next week to to talk about all-things eclipse.

Dr. Aaron Coyner is a physics professor at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

He's holding a free talk called Science in the Shadows.

Coyner will cover the history and importance of eclipses and the science learned from tthem.

A limited number of free eclipse glasses will be handed out.

Coyner says Coos Bay will be able to see a 97 percent eclipse on August 21.

"It is a very valuable opportunity for people to see," Coyner says, "it's a rare event but it's also a very unique event and visually stunning to look at if the weather decides to cooperate."

The talk is on Wednesday, August 16, at 7 p.m. in the Myrtlewood Room at the Coos Bay Library.
