In the Garden: How to tell if an apple is ready to harvest
Harvest season is just around the corner and this year it's coming two to three weeks ahead of schedule.
Apple trees grow well in Eugene, but many people wonder how to tell when an apple is ready to pick from a branch.
Brooke Edmunds from the OSU Extension has a few suggestions:
1. Pick an apple and take a bite. If it's ripe, others like it should be as well.
2. Pick an apple and cut it in half. If the seeds are brown and fully developed, the apple is ripe.
3. Try twisting the apple off the branch by lifting it up and turning it (don't pull). If the apple comes off easily, it is ready to eat.
