Acts of Kindness - The Good Neighbor Fund: 'Luis is always up-beat, always positive'
HARRISBURG, Ore. - Sherman Bros. Trucking is an enterprise that transports customer products around 48 states, specifically centered on Interstate 5.
It's a family-run and family-oriented business, but the transport team in Harrisburg is ensuring that all its employees truly feel they are a part of a family.
About four years ago, Sherman Bros. started what they call, "The Good Neighbor Fund."
When an employee encounters some kind of personal financial hardship, a committee for the fund can determine the best way to help the employee and determine how much money they may need.
The fund is truly a group effort, but one man is leading the way.
Luis Campos works as a driver and manager for the glass fleet at Sherman Bros., but he also devotes much of his time to the Good Neighbor Fund.
He's been Chairman of the fund for a year now.
"I enjoy it," said Campos. "You know, I have kids and family and to me this is my second family. So, we kind of help each other out."
The Good Neighbor Fund gives employees at Sherman Bros. something to fall back on when put in a financial crisis, such as medical leave. It's all funded through donations.
"People make donations, cash, or they give a one time gift," said Good Neighbor Fund Committee Member, Keely Eccles. "Or it's deducted through their payroll on a consistent basis, it doesn't matter what that amount is and it goes directly into that fund."
Another way the committee raises money is through fundraising.
"It's not just the company," said Sara Garcia, Treasurer of Good Neighbor Fund, "It's everybody here working together, donating money every month to make sure we're all taken care of, and that's an even better feeling.."
"This is actually one of the first companies I've worked for that actually does this kind of stuff," said Campos. "So, trying to help out the fellow employees and everybody getting together and having fun, and everybody understanding that, that money is going to help somebody some way somehow."
It's this mindset Campos has that committee members say makes him a perfect fit to lead the way.
"Since he's become chairman of the Good Neighbor Fund, it's almost inspiring to see how enthusiastic he is," said Garcia.
"If something goes wrong or if they're not on their dispatch or where they are if they're off," said Eccles. "He always lets me know. So, his communication skills are very excellent. And he's fun."
Jaclyn Lumpin, Secretary for the Good Neighbor Fund said of Campos, "Luis is just always up-beat, always positive, always has a smile on his face. Drivers really respect him as do the employees in the office."
