Prefontaine Memorial Run (Coos Bay)

Pre Run to be Chip-Timed for the First Time

April 15, 2014 - On-line registration forms are now available for the 35th Annual Prefontaine Memorial Run, which will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Printed race applications will be mailed out to participants of the last three Pre races, and those wanting to register early can log on to the race's website at, according to the run's Executive Director, Bob Huggins.
An OSAA-sanctioned 5K high school cross country competition starts at 9:45 AM at the corner of 4th and Anderson in downtown Coos Bay, followed by the open 10K run and 2-mile fun run/walk at 10:00 AM.
For the first time in the race's history, the event will be computer chip-timed by Eclectic Edge Racing out of Eugene, Ore. This will facilitate much quicker results processing with custom printouts available for each runner, notes Huggins.
The popular run got its start in 1980 when a group of Coos Bay citizens decided it was time that Steve Prefontaine's hometown did something to honor its favorite son. Now in its 35th year, the run takes place over one of Pre's favorite training routes and finishes at the track at Marshfield High School now bearing his name.
Event sponsors include NIKE, Bigfoot Beverages, Vend West Services, South Coast Running Club, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, the Prefontaine Foundation and the Prefontaine Memorial Committee.
The Prefontaine Memorial Committee is a non-profit organization, and profits from the race and from retail sales from the Committee's website store help fund track and cross country programs of Coos County area high schools, sponsor the Prefontaine Track Club, and provides numerous scholarships for Coos County High School track and cross country athletes going on to college.
