PetFest comes to Lively Park

Willamalane Park and Recreation District's annual PetFest, a free event for pets and their owners, is set Saturday, Sept. 27, at Lively Park, 6100 Thurston Road in Springfield.

Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event features demonstrations by working dogs, vendor booths, educational sessions led by pet specialists, prize drawings and more. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets on leash.

Highlights include a photo booth; nonprofit agencies that offer pet services; an Ask-a-Vet station; dog training and agility demonstrations; and playtime in Willamalane's dog park, which features separate areas for large and small dogs.

Spot Magazine, a monthly publication distributed throughout the Northwest, again will conduct a cover model search at the event.

"PetFest keeps getting bigger and better every year," says Christine Crutcher, the event's coordinator. "Our pet education/exhibitor pavilions will host more than 30 pet service and product suppliers, including groomers and pet boarding operators from throughout the Willamette Valley."

Veterinarians from McKenzie Animal Hospital will offer free advice and answer questions at the Ask-a-Vet station.

Willamette Agility Group from Albany will give small agility demonstrations between the pavilions and talk to pet owners about dog agility and competition basics. Dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy.

Several activities will occur at the park's three-field dog park complex.

In one field, the Springfield Police Department's K-9 Unit will give tracking and detention demonstrations. A professional dog trainer will provide information about dog park safety, etiquette and behavior tips.

The second field will be open for off-leash play for small dogs less than 25 pounds, and the third field will be open for off-leash play for dogs 26 pounds and up.

Participating vendors and educators include: Canines for Clean Water, Community Veterinary Center, Country Inn Kennels/Unleashed, Faithful Friends Pet Services and Cemetery, Greenhill Humane Society, Lane Area Ferret Lovers Club, McKenzie Animal Hospital, McKenzie Cascade Dog Fanciers, SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today), Spot Magazine, Springfield Animal Control, Vic's Vintage Photo Booth, Wags!
