PARKLAND, Wash. -- An 18-month-old girl was struck and killed in a tragic accident at a Parkland church parking lot Tuesday.

The driver of a Chevrolet Avalanche truck was parked at the Lamb of God Christian Community Church talking to a relative who had walked up to her driver's side window around 8 p.m., said the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

After they were done talking, the driver pulled her truck forward onto 131st Street South and stopped at the stop sign at Pacific Avenue South.

While stopped there, she noticed a commotion behind her and saw a small child laying on the ground and the child's father running out of the church toward the child.

The child's mother picked up the child and jumped into the woman's truck and they began to drive to a hospital as they called 911 for help.

Dispatchers had the driver pull over in a nearby parking lot to wait for an ambulance. Medics arrived and rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital where she later died.

Police say the driver returned to the scene, was fully cooperative with investigators and showed no signs of impairment. Investigators say so far, no one interviewed said they saw the child get hit or how the child got out into the parking lot.

"Our hearts go out to everyone involved in what appears to be a very unfortunate accident," the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said.
