SUV hits tree, bursts into flames on Hwy 138; man, child escape injury

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A man and a child escaped without injury after their SUV went off the highway, hit a tree and burst into flames Wednesday morning, Oregon State Police said.

Dale Emerald Hahn Jr., 39, of Chemult and a child passenger were eastbound on Highway 138 when their 1999 Dodge Durango left the roadway for unknown reasons near milepost 56, police said.

Hahn and the child got out OK as the SUV burst into flames, police said.

The fire spread to vegetation in the area.

A US Forest Service engine crew from the Diamond Lake Ranger Station at Toketee responded and contained the fire. High Cascades ODOT personnel responded with a water truck to assist with extinguishing the fire.

The firefighting response took about an hour.

Troopers cited Hahn for careless driving.
