Police: Pedestrian hit, killed by car on Hwy 126 in Veneta

VENETA, Ore. - A car hit and killed a man walking his dog along Highway 126 on Wednesday morning.

Police identified the victim as 50-year-old Thomas F. Ascariz II of Veneta, Oregon State Police said.

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. on Hwy 126 near Cornerstone Drive in Veneta.

State police said a westbound silver 2007 Volkswagen Passat traveled onto the shoulder of the highway for unknown reasons and hit the man.

The driver of the VW - Shaynor Newsome, 47, of Eugene - did not suffer any physical injuries, state police said.

The victim's dog survived and was taken to a local shelter, state police said.
