Police: Pedestrian hit by car, critically injured

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A car hit a pedestrian Monday morning as the man crossed Beltline on foot at Gateway Street against the light, Springfield Police said.

Christopher Michael Seekings of Springfield, 26, is in critical condition at Sacred Hearth Medical Center at RiverBend, Lt. Scott McKee said.

Sgt. Mike McCarthy described the man's injuries as "life-threatening."

The crash happened around 5:45 a.m. Police ask any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the crash to contact Sgt. McCarthy at (541) 726-3714.

Witnesses told police the man was northbound on the east side of Gateway Street.

He had already cleared one lane of traffic and was entering the second lane when the car hit him, McKee said.

Witnesses told police that the 56-year-old female driver had a green light.

Witnesses told police the pedestrian may have been distracted by a cell phone at the time of the crash. The man was wearing dark-colored clothing.
