EUGENE, Ore. - Police have been in contact with the other person in a pickup truck that crashed Saturday, killing a 24-year-old Eugene man.
Police initally said officers were working to "locate another person whom witness advised fled from the scene."
"He has been contacted and police continue to investigate," Melinda McLaughlin with Eugene Police said Tuesday. "There have not been any arrests."
Police identified the deceased as Mack Wallace Carothers of Eugene.
Carothers was found unresponsive and not breathing in the wreckage of a 1981 Toyota SR5 pickup on Bailey Hill Road at Fours Oaks Grange Road at 2:26 a.m. Saturday morning. Medics attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful.
Police would still like to talk to anyone with information about the crash.
"We would like any people who saw the crash or events leading up to it to contact us," McLaughlin said.
Investigators are still working to determine whether Carothers or the other occupant was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
Witnesses told police "the vehicle was traveling west on Bailey Hill Road at a high rate of speed, lost control and struck a tree on the side of the roadway just prior to Four Oaks Grange Road."
