Police: Bend man dead after losing control on icy Oregon highway, hitting semi head-on

CHILOQUIN, Ore. - A Bend man died after he lost control of his pickup on an icy stretch of Highway 97 and collided head-on with an oncoming semi truck and trailer, Oregon State Police said.

The crash happened Sunday morning just before 2 a.m. between Chemult and Chiloquin.

State police said Roy Everett Smith, 64, of Bend was driving southbound in a 2000 Ford F250 pickup when he lost control on ice. The pickup crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming semi truck.

Medics attempted to save Smith's life, but he died at the scene, state police said.

The driver of the big rig - Jeanne May McJunkin, 65, of Cheney, Wash.; and her passenger, William Charles McJunkin, 64 - were taken to the hospital from the scene, police said. They are expected to survive their injuries.
