Motorcyclist crashes into bear on Hwy 101, suffers serious injuries

REEDSPORT, Ore. - A motorcyclist crashed into a bear Saturday, suffering serious injuries, according to an Oregon State Police accident report.

Eliot Martin Lapidus, 64, of Canby was just south of Reedsport on Highway 101 when the bear ran out into the road around 11 a.m., according to police.

Lapidus was unable to avoid hitting the bear with his Harley Davidson. He and his motorcycle slid about 50 yards after impact, according to police.

Medics took Lapidus to Lower Umpqua Hospital with serious injuries. He was later flown by air ambublance to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. His current condition was not available.

A second motorcyclist - identified as Kathyrn Diane Lapidus, 55, of Canby - hit the first bike and crashed into an embankment, police said. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital, according to police.
