Family members are saying goodbye to a 3-year-old boy who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Gresham on Saturday night.

Armando Camargo-Carmen was struck at an apartment complex along SE 162nd Avenue. The driver ran away from the crash scene and later turned himself in to Portland police.

His mother, Erika Carmen Gonzalez, is now dealing with the loss of her youngest child.

“I'll never forget the smiles that he had on his face. All the time he was smiling,” she tells KATU, with a family member translating the native Spanish speakers words.

Erika said she remembers Armando was playing with other kids from church.

“The person that did this… it wasn't an accident. He needs to be in jail,” Gonzalez said.

Erika went on to explain the effect Armando’s death has had on her 8-year-old son. She says the two were inseparable.

“I told him that he'll always live in our hearts… and we’ll always remember him as a happy baby boy.”

The single mother is planning her son's funeral with the help of family friends and members of her church. They're worried about the unexpected expense and are raising money through a GoFundMe page.
