Fatal crash closes Hwy 97 north of Klamath Falls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - A driver died after pulling out onto Highway 97 in front of a semi truck Wednesday morning.

The identity of the deceased and the other people involved are not yet known. Authorities are working to contatct the family of the deceased.

The crash happened around 7:40 a.m.

State police said the driver of a gold Buick Century turned onto the highway from Algoma Road.

"However, for unknown reasons, the driver turned directly in front of a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), which was traveling northbound on Highway 97," state police said in a statement. "The CMV was unable to avoid the collision and crashed into the Buick."

The crash ejected the driver of the Buick from the car. The driver died at the scene.

The passenger in the Buick was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The semi driver was not injured.

The crash response and investigation closed Hwy 97 until almost 2:40 p.m.. Oregon DOT put a detour in place around the scene.
