BLACK BUTTE, Ore. - A Eugene woman woman died Sunday when an oncoming car crossed into her lane on Highway 20 near the entrance to the Black Butte Ranch, Oregon State Police said.
A North Bend man in an RV tried to avoid the crash collided with another car; the driver of the car suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
The Eugene woman killed in the crash - identified as Katherine L. Sales, 80 - died at the scene, police said.
The driver of the Subaru that hit Sales in her Chevrolet Equinox - identified as Ethan Moreschi, 28, of Bend - also died in the crash, police said.
A driver of an RV - identified as Robert Lounsbury, 49, of North Bend - towing a Chevy Tahoe attempted to avoid the first collision and collided with a VW Jetta driven by 28-year-old Timothy Thompson of Newberg, police said.
Lounsbury suffered minor injuries, police said. His passenger was not injured.
Thompson suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken by helicopter to the hospital in Bend.
The crash remains under investigation.
"Both Moreschi and Thompson knew each other and it is believed they were with each other shortly before the crash," state police said. "Impairment is being considered as a contributing factor for both Moreschi and Thompson."
The crash happened around 3 p.m. The investigation affected traffic for more than 6 hours.
