Girl, 13, killed in crash with minivan near Battle Ground

A 13-year-old girl died Wednesday morning after she was hit by a minivan near Battle Ground.

Clark County deputies were investigating the incident Wednesday morning near the intersection of 289th Street and 82nd Avenue. The crash happened around 9: 30 a.m.

According to deputies, the 77-year-old driver hit the girl and continued driving his van about a mile down the road. The sheriff's office say he was confused and distraught, adding that they don't think he was trying to take off, but that he was getting his van out of first responders' way.

Our news partners at the Columbian report authorities stopped the vehicle suspected in the crash some distance away, per the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies detained the 77-year-old man driving the minivan.

Crash investigators don't think speed, drugs, or alcohol had anything to do with the crash. They are not anticipating any charges right now.

*Editor's note - initial reports said that the girl was riding a bicycle when she was struck. Police later confirmed that she was not on a bike.
