A cyclist died early Thursday morning after colliding with a minivan along a Marion County road.

The sheriff's office reported the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. and said it was both dark and rainy in the area. The report said the cyclist was riding along Shaff Road in an area with a very small shoulder when a minivan driver hit the bicycle from behind.

Marion County officials said the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and did not have a light on the bicycle. He has been identified as 46-year-old Charles M. Phillips of Aumsville.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation. Officials did not say whether or not the driver would be cited or charged in the crash.
