TACOMA, Wash. - A 7-year-old boy was trick-or-treating Monday night when he was hit by an SUV in Tacoma.

It happened around 7:20 p.m. near North 9th and North I streets.

Police said the boy was holding his father's hand and crossing the street, when the SUV driver hit him.

Witnesses said the driver tried to get away, but they helped detain him until police arrived.

"It's my understanding he was attempting to leave, I don't know if he was trying to drive away of if he was trying to flee on foot," said Tacoma Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool.

The boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular assault.
