Timbers sign 5-year-old goalkeeper through Make-A-Wish Foundation
PORTLAND, Ore. —
The Portland Timbers have signed 5-year-old N Portland resident Derrick Tellez to a one-game contract through the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Derrick is battling a cancerous brain tumor and wanted to be Timbers player for a day -- and that's exactly what he'll be this week.
He'll spend the day Friday training with the Timbers, meeting all the players and coaches, and getting a tour of the training center. He, along with his older brother, will receive personalized jerseys.
"Derrick is an extremely talented young goalkeeper, and we’re excited to have him signed for this weekend’s game against Orlando City,” said Caleb Porter, head coach of the Timbers. “We are pleased to have him join our club and look forward to his contributions."
