Oregon men's golf first after Bandon Dunes Championship opening round
BANDON, Ore. – The No. 8 University of Oregon men's golf team finished first of a field of 16 after an opening round of a 13-under 275 Sunday at the Gonzaga-hosted Bandon Dunes Championship at the par-72, 6,893-yard Old MacDonald course. Oregon's 275 is their best opening round of the 2016-17 campaign.
Senior Wyndham Clark, ranked the No. 1 Division I golfer in the country, found his way to the top of the leaderboard again and is second overall after firing a 6-under 66 – his best opening round as a Duck. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Gronlund and sophomore Edwin Yi are tied for sixth overall after a first round of 69 (-3).
The Ducks are eight strokes ahead of No. 21 Colorado and No. 11 Texas Tech, who are tied for second (288, -5). No. 23 Auburn tallied a 284 (-4) and is fourth overall. No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 87 Oregon State and No. 71 Georgia State fired a 2-under 286 for a three-way fifth-place tie.
This is the third of the Ducks' four opening tournaments that Oregon has been in first after the opening round. Oregon's round of 275 is the team's best start of the 2017 campaign.
Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech is the first round individual leader with a 7-under 65. Denver's Petter Mikalsen is at 5-under (67) and third overall, while Cameron Champ (Texas A&M) and Derek Bayley (Washington State) are tied for fourth at 4-under (68). Kavan Eubank (Texas A&M), Greg Gildea (Fresno State), Spencer Painton (Colorado), and Jacob Solomon (Auburn) are tied with Yi and Gronlund for sixth (69, -3).

Through the first nine holes, the Ducks were at even par-72 and tied with Gonzaga for 7th. Texas Tech jumped ahead with an early lead and was 10-under. Colorado and Oregon State were tied at 2nd at 4-under. Through the next three holes, the Ducks would make major jumps up to third (6-under). Clark was 6-under with five birdies, one eagle (hole six), and one Bogey (hole 12).
Through 14 holes, the Ducks clawed their way to the top of the leaderboard with a one-stroke advantage (-9) over Colorado (-8). Clark maintained his 6-under, while Yi followed at 2-under.
With finishing holes to go, Oregon maintained their No. 1 spot and was 11-under, now four-strokes ahead of Colorado (-7). Clark was tied with Ronneblad (Texas Tech) for first overall at 5-under. Yi was tied for 9th (-3), and Gronlund was tied within the top 15, at 12th (-2).
To close out the day, the Ducks (275, -13) finished eight strokes ahead of Colorado and Texas Tech who tied for second (283, -5).
Clark finished second overall (66, -6), while Yi and Gronlund tied for 6th (69, -3). Freshman Norman Xiong finished with the top 20 and is tied for 18th (71, -1). Freshman Kevin Geniza rounded out the Oregon lineup with a 3-over 75, and is tied for 55th.
Sophomore Sam Foust, freshman Roberto Lebrija, and redshirt seniors Nigel Lett and Sulman Raza golfed as individuals. Foust is tied for 47th after carding a 2-over 74. Lebrija is tied with Geniza for 55th with 3-over 75s. Lett and Sulman are tied for 84th (79, +7) and 89th (80, +8), respectively.
Oregon carded 23 birdies, two Eagles, and met par 48 times.
Oregon's 275 is their best opening round of the 2016-17 campaign. This is the third of the Ducks' four opening tournaments that Oregon has been in first after the opening round.
Clark's 66 (-6) is his best opening round as a Duck. Yi's 69 is his best opening round of the 2016-17 campaign.
The second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m.
